Research Interests
Dr. Shitij Kapur, MD, FRCPC, PhD is currently the Canada Research Chair for Schizophrenia and Therapeutic Neuroscience, his work focuses on understanding schizophrenia and its treatment. Using PET imaging he has focussed on the study of the role of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin in schizophrenia and antipsychotic action. This work has shown that all antipsychotics (typical and atypical) block dopamine D2 receptors, but, to different degrees – and that these differences are clinically meaningful. These findings have had implications form the bench to the bedside. At the “bench” level Dr. Kapur is working on animal models that can be used to derive more innovative treatments for Schizophrenia. At the “bedside” level his work using psychological theories and computational models tries to understand the phenomenology of antipsychotic effecet – to provide a more holistic understanding of the experience of psychosis and the impact of antipsychotic medications.
