Research Interests
Dr. Cheryl L. Grady is a senior scientist at the Rotman Research Institute and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. In her research she uses functional MRI to explore age-related changes in brain activity during cognitive tasks. This research has shown a considerable degree of plasticity in brain function over the lifespan. Older adults recruit more activity in the frontal lobes during memory tasks than do younger adults, and those older people who are able to engage these regions have the best memory. This indicates that there is some reorganization of brain activity with aging, which may promote the maintenance of memory ability in older adults. Current work is focused on the generality of these age differences across cognitive domains, and how cognitive rehabilitation training affects brain activity.
