Recruitment
Recruitment Committee Mission Statement
Mental illness affects approximately one in four people throughout their lifespan. Despite increasing recognition of the needs of the mentally ill, the majority of those afflicted do not receive care from mental health professionals. The elderly, the poor, the chronically disabled, and those with mental illness residing outside urban centres are particularly vulnerable to receiving inadequate care.
The purpose of the Resident Recruitment Committee is:
- To encourage beginning medical students to consider a career in psychiatry.
- To communicate the satisfaction of a career in psychiatry.
- To recruit senior medical students into the Department of Psychiatry Residency Program.
To achieve its purpose the Resident Recruitment Committee plans a variety of activities aimed at all levels of medical student training. These include:
- Medical Student Dinners
- Psychiatry Interest Group (P.I.G.)
- Information Days
- Psychiatry Institute for Medical Students
“Many Faces of Psychiatry”
This is a booklet distributed through the Department of Psychiatry to those seeking information about the Residency Program and a career in psychiatry. This booklet highlights the wide diversity of lifestyles and careers choices available within the field of psychiatry and describes the University of Toronto Residency Program. The booklet is updated regularly to keep information current.
Database Development
The Committee is in the process of establishing a database to track patterns of student selection of psychiatry as a career and to conduct research on recruitment related activities.
