    Tapscott Chair in Schizophrenia Studies

I am very pleased to announce that following an extensive international search, Dr. Art Petronis has been awarded the Tapscott Chair in Schizophrenia Studies for a five-year term, renewable, effective April 1, 2010.

Dr. Petronis is a world leader in the rapidly developing field of epigenetics and his work focuses on the underlying causes of complex conditions such as schizophrenia.  He is a Full Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, a Senior Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and Head of the Krembil Family Epigenetics Laboratory at CAMH.  He also is a member of the Institute of Medical Science and a member of the Graduate Faculty in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Petronis has been described as “One of the pioneers in epigenetic research,” “an independent and creative thinker with remarkable technical abilities” and “a remarkably driven scientist who reflects the highest standards of scholarship” by senior investigators in his field.  He has published his work extensively in very high quality journals and his papers have been cited over 1900 times!  He has been a leading contributor to the development of the general theory of the epigenetics of complex diseases, to the concept of epigenetic heritability, to understanding epigenetic mechanisms in major psychoses and to the development of high throughput strategies for epigenetic profiling.  His experience in experimental design of epigenomic studies and bioinformatics data analysis has been summarized in a book entitled DNA Methylation Microarrays:  Experimental Design and Statistical Analysis (co-authored by Wang and Petronis).  This is the first comprehensive treatise in the field of statistics and bioinformatics pertaining to epigenomic studies.

In addition to his outstanding contributions as a scientist, Dr. Petronis is a gifted lecturer and presenter and a sought after teacher and mentor.  I am sure that everyone will join me in congratulating Art on assuming this important Chair and in wishing him success and satisfaction in his new role.

Research Careers in Canada Survey Reminder for Faculty of Medicine

    Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the AFMC (Association of the Faculties of Medicine of Canada) and Dean Whiteside we would like to say a sincere Thank You to those of you who have taken the time to reply to the Research Careers in Canada Survey.  This study is designed to obtain data which will support the initiative to increase funding for biomedical and health researchers in Canada. Your input is greatly appreciated.  For those who have not responded to the earlier survey invitations, we strongly encourage you to do so.

The deadline for the Research Careers in Canada Survey has been extended to March 15th, 2010 in an effort to increase the response rate (UofT’s response rate is currently 21.60%).  Everyone’s input from the University of Toronto and its 10 fully affiliated research hospitals is critical to ensure that we have a complete and accurate picture of research career activities and funding support in Canada. The Federal, Provincial and other funding agencies require these data to allocate and plan research career support in the near and far term.

Your work as a biomedical or health researcher represents an enormous social benefit. It is important that your voice be added to the study to ensure both the strength and relevance of the data. The study results will be used to advocate for programs that better support your work and career.  Even if you are uncertain about your eligibility, take the survey since a few introductory questions will exclude you if appropriate. For those who are eligible, the questionnaire will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated.

PLEASE CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO TAKE THE ONLINE SURVEY

    http://afmc.fluidsurveys.com/s/research-careers-in-canada/

Please note that the survey is anonymous and your participation is voluntary. You may refuse to participate, refuse to answer any question(s) or withdraw at any time. Your decision to participate or not participate in the survey will have no effect on your employment status. If you choose to participate in the study, any personal information you provide will be entirely optional. Your information will be used in confidence for research purposes and the results of the study can be sent to you, if you wish to receive them.

If you have any questions about the study or your rights as a research participant please contact Heather Drouillard, 416-978-4660 or heather.drouillard@utoronto.ca.

Thank you for your time and participation.

Survey on Feedback to Faculty Supervisors

    Dear Faculty,

I am writing to strongly advocate that you participate in a very important anonymous online survey that is being conducted by Drs Chloe Leon and Oshrit Wanono. The survey focuses on examining the challenges in providing staff supervisors with formative feedback about their supervision. This is an extremely relevant survey which has the opportunity to enhance open and frank communication between residents and faculty supervisors.

I urge you to complete this very brief survey which can be accessed at this link.

    Canadian Institutes of Health Research
    Strategy on Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR)

The overarching goal of the Strategy on Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) is to translate research results into improved health outcomes for Canadians. For patients, this means receiving better diagnoses, treatments and outcomes in a timely manner. For health care practitioners, this means obtaining the latest evidence-based medical information that will enable them to deliver the recommended care to the right patient at the right time. For scientists, this means enhanced resources to test new therapies and produce better research output. For hospitals and other health care institutions, this gives them the ability to attract the best and the brightest minds in health care. For governments, this aims to create a more cost-effective delivery of health care in fields such as primary care and chronic disease management as well as an overall improved health system.

With its partners at universities, hospitals, health charities and in the federal, provincial and territorial governments, CIHR is seeking their advice on patient-oriented research in order to develop a country-wide strategy.

Your contribution is essential to the success of this initiative, therefore we kindly ask you to take the time to review the Executive Summary and all of the sections of the SPOR Discussion Paper.  We also welcome your input and have prepared a survey to capture your suggestions.

The Department of Psychiatry's 36th Annual Harvey Stancer Research Day will be held on Thursday June 17th, 2010.

Research Day is a major function of the Department of Psychiatry. It allows researchers to present a synopsis of their current research to one another, to the Toronto Psychiatric community, and to the public. In particular, it provides the opportunity for junior members in our Department, including residents, fellows and students, to prepare and deliver an academic presentation. Research submissions, including studies using quantitative, qualitative, and case study designs and methodologies are welcome.

This year's Harvey Stancer Research Day will be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Poster presenters are expected to display their poster prior to the keynote session and are expected to attend the keynote session and be available during the poster session to answer questions from attendees. Speakers are expected to attend the keynote session and sessions when they are not presenting.

Attendees not presenting are required to register starting from MARCH 1, 2010 and closing on APRIL 2, 2010 no later than 5 p.m. EST.

University of Toronto Centre for Patient Safety:
2009-2010 Certificate in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement

    Dear Faculty,

Last year, Drs. Ed Etchells (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre), Kaveh Shojania (SHSC), Chaim Bell (St. Michael’s Hospital), Anne Matlow (Sick Kids Hospital), and Chris Hayes (St. Michael’s) ran a Certificate Course through the University of Toronto’s Centre for Faculty Development. This course filled to capacity within two weeks of the announcement. The 39 participants came from the Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Surgery, Family & Community Medicine, and Radiology and represented all of the core University of Toronto teaching hospitals. Their academic ranks included subspecialty residents and fellows (5), Clinical Associates (2), Lecturers (8), Assistant Professors (14), and Full Professors (3), including one Division Head.  These individuals predominantly came from the Faculty of Medicine, but this year’s course has been modified to increase multidisciplinary participation.

The course consists of didactic and interactive sessions roughly 2 Friday afternoons per month from October to May. Interested individuals can also use the course as an opportunity to develop projects in patient safety or quality improvement that they plan to implement in their respective institutions.

Formal and informal feedback from last year’s course has been uniformly positive, so the course is being offered again under the auspices of both the Centre for Faculty Development and the newly created University of Toronto Centre for Patient Safety. Guest lectures include prominent local and external researchers and decision makers (e.g., from the Ministry of Health), as well as the course directors.

The full course description and link to the registration form can be found at http://www.deptmedicine.utoronto.ca/Faculty/patient_safety.htm
