    I am writing to inform everyone about a significant change in Dr. Peter Prendergast's responsibilities. As the attached announcement indicates, after 17 years of superb leadership as Psychiatrist in Chief and Physician in Chief at the Whitby Mental Health Centre (now Ontario Shores), Peter has decided to step down. The hospital has just completed a formal affiliation agreement with the Faculty of Medicine and Peter has been the driving force behind this achievement. His leadership at Ontario Shores has been characterized by a significant expansion of the medical staff, creation of a stimulating environment in which to develop academic initiatives and an array of effective partnerships across the hospital's region. Peter also has been a leader in the evolution of mental health planning in the Whitby area and beyond.

    Peter will be continuing in his Department of Psychiatry positions of Executive Vice Chair and Vice Chair, Clinical Affairs and Co-Director, Health Systems Program.

    Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences - Communications

    Dear Friends and Colleagues,
     
    I'm writing to inform you that Dr. Peter Prendergast, Physician-in-Chief, Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) has announced his decision to retire effective March 31, 2010.
     
    Dr. Prendergast has provided medical leadership at Ontario Shores for the last 17 years.  He served as Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Whitby Mental Health Centre prior to divestment when the organization became a public hospital in March 2006.  As a member of the senior management team and Board member, Dr.
    Prendergast has been an important contributor to the creation of the
    organization's new mission, vision and strategic directions.  
     
    During his time with the organization, Dr. Prendergast has been a strong advocate for increasing medical education, in particular through the development of a robust Grand Rounds program. He has demonstrated thoughtful consideration of clinical demands and opportunities for reshaping Ontario Shores' directions.  His knowledge and experience were particularly helpful in setting up the organization's post-divestment initial policies and approaches and he was instrumental in guiding the development of collaborative relationships with other mental health providers.
     
    In addition, Dr. Prendergast was a key player in facilitating the creation of a community affiliation agreement in 2009 with the University of Toronto to strengthen our role as a teaching hospital and link Ontario Shores with the largest medical school in Canada.
     
    He has been an examiner for the specialty of psychiatry with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and also a member of the Ontario Review Board.  Most recently, Dr. Prendergast chaired the Central East LHIN (CELHIN) Mental Health and Addictions Steering Committee and led the mental health care and addictions advisory group for the CELHIN Clinical Services Plan.
     
    Dr. Prendergast has been the Executive Vice-Chair, Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto.  As a sought-after lecturer, our Board has been well served by his ability to educate and share knowledge with good humour, patience and deep understanding of the complexities of mental health care issues. 

    Dr. Prendergast was influential in mental health reform and has contributed significantly to regional efforts to transform the mental health and addictions system. Colleagues within healthcare have greatly benefitted from his medical expertise, academic background and knowledge of mental health care within Canada and abroad. 
     
    On behalf of the Board and staff at Ontario Shores, we wish Dr. Prendergast all the best in the years ahead.

    The Toronto Addis Ababa Psychiatry Project – TAAPP

    January 2010

    Now in its seventh year, the educational partnership between the Departments of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto (UofT) and Addis Ababa University (AAU) Ethiopia started in 2003, with the mandate to build capacity and sustainability in the first Ethiopian psychiatry residency program.  Since 2003,16 small groups consisting of two psychiatrists and a UofT resident have travelled to Addis Ababa for a one month teaching trip; the program has grown and sustainability is within sight.  Returnees give the experience very high ratings, and many have been back for a second trip! 

    In the last year, four new Psychiatry Departments have been opened by TAAPP graduates outside the capital city Addis Ababa. So our needs for UofT volunteers have doubled – we continue to need 4 volunteer teachers a year for the residency program at AAU, and as well we need 4 volunteers a year to help the psychiatrists in the new peripheral centers.  For this latter work one volunteer visits 2 of the sites for 2 weeks each. 

    • We need volunteer psychiatry teachers for month of teaching in Addis!  There is a spot available for anyone able to travel to Addis to teach residents in March-April 2010.  Formal resident teaching takes place on 2 afternoons a week – the rest of the week is spent supervising residents in their clinics, in the psychiatric emergency room and on the wards.
    • We also need volunteer psychiatrists for one month a year to support the new Departments of Psychiatry outside Addis Ababa.  This is more challenging if you have not already taught in the Addis program, however it may be feasible for those who have previous experience in low income countries.  This month does not involve resident teaching but consists of a mixture of mentoring, support, systems development, advice, consultation and proposal writing assistance.

    CANADIAN INSTITUTES OF HEALTH RESEARCH (CIHR) Proof of Principle (POP) - Phases I and II

    Deadline for submission: MARCH 1, 2010 (Full application through ResearchNet and copies of signature pages by mail to CIHR)

    NOTE:  IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THIS COMPETITION

    Applicants are reminded to carefully follow the guidelines and to work with the Innovations and Partnerships Office (IPO) of the University on their applications.  Please also contact CIHR representatives to clarify potential eligibility issues or other questions about the programs.

    (1)  Proof of Principle: Phase I

    Financial support of a maximum of $160,000 is available to each approved research project of up to 12 months duration designed to advance discoveries/inventions towards commercializable technologies, with a view to attract new investment, create new science-based businesses, organizations and initiatives, and ultimately improve health outcomes for Canadians. Research projects across all four pillars of CIHR are eligible for this program. Note that the end product is not required to generate revenue, but there must be a demonstrated market and opportunity for your product. Applications for the continuation of a research project funded through the POP I grant must progress from Phase I to Phase II.

    (2)  Proof of Principle: Phase I - Winter 2010 Priority Announcement (Specific Research Areas)

    In this competition, funds are available to encourage and support applications in specific areas that are aligned with CIHR's research priority areas and mandates. The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is up to $160,000 for a maximum of 1 year.  CIHR anticipates that three grants will be funded through this competition.

    CIHR Research Priority Areas:

    - Cancer Early Detection, Imaging, or Translational Therapeutics
    - Drug Development
    - Regional Partnerships Program – New Brunswick
    - Regional Partnerships Program – Newfoundland and Labrador

    (3) Proof of Principle: Phase II

    Financial support of a maximum amount of $300,000 from CIHR over one year for a single grant is available at the co-investment stage undertaking follow-on proof of principle activities in partnership with a non-academic investor, e.g. industry.  The contribution for funding support from the company must meet the ratio of 1:1 (CIHR: Industry).  This funding opportunity is aimed at providing a platform to better enable the academic institution/researcher to move the discovery/invention further down the innovation pipeline.  Research projects across all four pillars of CIHR are eligible for this program.  Note that the end product is not required to generate revenue, but there must be a demonstrated market and opportunity for your product.

    PREPARATION OF APPLICATIONS:

    Please read carefully the Proof of Principle Grants - ResearchNet "Application" Phase Instructions when preparing the application (http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/27947.html).

    Applicants will work with the Innovations and Partnerships Office (IPO) of the University to complete the applications with required signatures before submission through ResearchNet and mailing of signature pages by mail to CIHR.

    KUNIN-LUNENFELD APPLIED RESEARCH UNIT

    POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN NEUROIMAGING OF MOOD AND COGNITION

    The Kunin-Lunenfeld Applied Research Unit (KLARU) at Baycrest is offering a two-year funded research fellowship in neuropsychiatry and neuroimaging in the laboratory of Dr. Linda Mah. Projects will focus on understanding the structural and functional neuroanatomical abnormalities associated with mood and memory disorders in the elderly and healthy aging. Studies will be carried out in collaboration with Dr. Cheryl Grady, Neuroimaging and Aging Lab, Rotman Research Institute and other researchers within KLARU and Rotman.

    Clinical training in neuropsychiatry, behavioural neurology, and neuropsychology may also be available as part of the fellowship, although a minimum of 80% of the fellow’s time will be devoted to research and related activities.  Start date is July 2010 or earlier. Bursaries are in line with the fellowship scales of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and include an allowance for travel and research expenses. Applicants should have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree. Baycrest welcomes applications from all qualified individuals, including members of visible groups, minorities, women, aboriginal persons, and persons with disabilities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

    KLARU is an applied research unit within the Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest, and is dedicated to fostering a closer integration of scientific research with clinical care at the bedside and into the community. The Rotman Research Institute (RRI) is a premier centre for cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging, and is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto.

    University of Toronto Centre for Patient Safety:
    2009-2010 Certificate in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement

    Dear Faculty,

    Last year, Drs. Ed Etchells (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre), Kaveh Shojania (SHSC), Chaim Bell (St. Michael’s Hospital), Anne Matlow (Sick Kids Hospital), and Chris Hayes (St. Michael’s) ran a Certificate Course through the University of Toronto’s Centre for Faculty Development. This course filled to capacity within two weeks of the announcement. The 39 participants came from the Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Surgery, Family & Community Medicine, and Radiology and represented all of the core University of Toronto teaching hospitals. Their academic ranks included subspecialty residents and fellows (5), Clinical Associates (2), Lecturers (8), Assistant Professors (14), and Full Professors (3), including one Division Head.  These individuals predominantly came from the Faculty of Medicine, but this year’s course has been modified to increase multidisciplinary participation. 

    The course consists of didactic and interactive sessions roughly 2 Friday afternoons per month from October to May. Interested individuals can also use the course as an opportunity to develop projects in patient safety or quality improvement that they plan to implement in their respective institutions.

    Formal and informal feedback from last year’s course has been uniformly positive, so the course is being offered again under the auspices of both the Centre for Faculty Development and the newly created University of Toronto Centre for Patient Safety. Guest lectures include prominent local and external researchers and decision makers (e.g., from the Ministry of Health), as well as the course directors.
