    OMA Election

I am writing to remind everyone that the Ontario Medical Association’s election now is open. Voting packages were sent to members and voting will close on February 24, 2010 at 2pm. It is important that the OMA have strong representation from all constituencies, including Academic Health Science Centres, specialty groups and, in our case, psychiatry.

I would like therefore to encourage everyone to consider supporting the candidacy of Dr. Blake Woodside for election to the OMA Board representing District 11 this year. Blake is, of course, a full professor in our department. Blake has had a great deal of experience in leadership positions with provincial and national organizations, including the Canadian Psychiatric Association. Currently the OMA Board has only nine specialists out of 25 members and all five current District 11 Board members are family physicians.

Please consider voting in this year’s election.

The Toronto Addis Ababa Psychiatry Project – TAAPP

    January 2010

Now in its seventh year, the educational partnership between the Departments of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto (UofT) and Addis Ababa University (AAU) Ethiopia started in 2003, with the mandate to build capacity and sustainability in the first Ethiopian psychiatry residency program.  Since 2003,16 small groups consisting of two psychiatrists and a UofT resident have travelled to Addis Ababa for a one month teaching trip; the program has grown and sustainability is within sight.  Returnees give the experience very high ratings, and many have been back for a second trip!

In the last year, four new Psychiatry Departments have been opened by TAAPP graduates outside the capital city Addis Ababa. So our needs for UofT volunteers have doubled – we continue to need 4 volunteer teachers a year for the residency program at AAU, and as well we need 4 volunteers a year to help the psychiatrists in the new peripheral centers.  For this latter work one volunteer visits 2 of the sites for 2 weeks each.

    • We need volunteer psychiatry teachers for month of teaching in Addis!  There is a spot available for anyone able to travel to Addis to teach residents in March-April 2010.  Formal resident teaching takes place on 2 afternoons a week – the rest of the week is spent supervising residents in their clinics, in the psychiatric emergency room and on the wards.
    • We also need volunteer psychiatrists for one month a year to support the new Departments of Psychiatry outside Addis Ababa.  This is more challenging if you have not already taught in the Addis program, however it may be feasible for those who have previous experience in low income countries.  This month does not involve resident teaching but consists of a mixture of mentoring, support, systems development, advice, consultation and proposal writing assistance.

Your return ticket is paid for, as well as accommodation and transportation to and from the work site in Ethiopia.  If you enjoy teaching and the clinical supervision of residents, or want to assist our new graduates work to securely establish new departments of psychiatry - please write addressing the items below and email to Ana Favas at AFavas@mtsinai.on.ca  Or call Clare Pain for further information 416 586 4800 x8890

Shirley Brown Chair in Women’s Mental Health Research
    The Women’s College Research Institute

    Toronto, Ontario

The Women’s College Research Institute (WCRI) is the research arm of Women’s College Hospital (WCH) - the first and only independent ambulatory care hospital in Ontario, and the only hospital in Ontario with a primary focus on women's health. The hospital and its research institute are fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. The WCRI has a diverse core faculty of 19 scientists, a dynamic trainee program and a network of research partnerships with the clinicians of Women’s College Hospital and with scientists across our University community. WCRI scientists study health conditions that have unique implications for women; social issues that have important impacts on women’s health and well-being; and health systems innovations to improve outcomes for women and their families. Together our scientists and trainees work to address critical gaps in women’s health knowledge, which prevent women from maintaining health and independence across the lifespan.

Shirley Brown Chair in Women’s Mental Health Research
The Shirley Brown Chair (SBC) in Women's Mental Health Research is based at the Women’s College Research Institute. This research chair was established in collaboration with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), and the University of Toronto. It was created by a dynamic community-based fundraising campaign honouring a young lawyer who succumbed to severe depression. The chair fosters women's mental health research efforts at its three founding institutions and provides a focal point for advocacy on women's mental health issues. The chair helps bring research disciplines together to explore issues that address both the biological and social aspects of women's mental health, creating networks that sustain a holistic program of women's mental health research. The mandate of the chair is to support an individual with a strong academic track record with an expectation that the individual carry out a program of internationally recognized research. In addition to being an outstanding scientist, the individual must possess the ability to stimulate and mentor junior colleagues. The chair is also expected to have strong leadership abilities and to carry out ambassadorial functions with the public in education, fundraising and dissemination of knowledge. It is a position characterized by broad intersectional scope.

The University of Toronto is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

If you would like additional information on this position, or would like to refer a candidate for this position, please contact us by March 22, 2010.

Please inquire about other Women's Mental Health opportunities in the Toronto area.

    Ontario Psychiatric Association:

The OPA 90th Annual Conference will be held on April 23rd and 24th, 2010 at
Le Méridien King Edward Hotel, 37 King Street East, Toronto, Ontario

    1.  In the past OPA has made a time available for psych department chairs and post-grad directors to meet, I'm checking whether or not there is interest in OPA facilitating such a meeting during this annual conference (I'm aware there are other opportunities for you to meet with your counterparts from across Canada, not sure whether you feel there's 'value added' to also have a chance to meet just with the other Ontario people this year).  Please let me know what you think.

    2.  While we of course have submissions and invited speakers from different parts of the province, we're also offering each university a time slot if they wished to present a session identified specifically as highlighting or showcasing work from that university.  Please let me know if you'd be interested in having a session for presentation by the Toronto department of psychiatry, we'd be happy to work with you to fit a relevant session into the conference program.

    3.  Lastly, it would be wonderful if you could assist in informing your faculty of the conference (OPA conference has typically been in Jan or Feb in the past, we felt spring is a better time for many reasons but people wouldn't yet be associating it with that time of year).  Again, the dates are April 23 & 24, and there is an early bird rate for rooms at the hotel until February 9, early bird registration is until March 12, and all rooms need to be booked by March 26.  If you were able to send a group email to your faculty informing them of the conference, with a link to opa website, http://www.eopa.ca/ , that would be very much appreciated.

Thanks again, looking forward to getting your feedback re: the above (I've also cc'ed Halyna Troian, our Association Director, on this).

    Best regards,

    Sonu Gaind
    Education Committee Chair, OPA
    Past-President, OPA

NOTE:  IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THIS COMPETITION

    * Revsied grant maximum amount per grant
    * Revised funding Pool Amount for the competition
    * Elimination of LOI stage of review

Applicants are reminded to carefully follow the guidelines and to work with the Innovations and Partnerships Office (IPO) of the University on their applications.  Please also contact CIHR representatives to clarify potential eligibility issues or other questions about the programs.

Financial support of a maximum of $160,000 is available to each approved research project of up to 12 months duration designed to advance discoveries/inventions towards commercializable technologies, with a view to attract new investment, create new science-based businesses, organizations and initiatives, and ultimately improve health outcomes for Canadians. Research projects across all four pillars of CIHR are eligible for this program. Note that the end product is not required to generate revenue, but there must be a demonstrated market and opportunity for your product. Applications for the continuation of a research project funded through the POP I grant must progress from Phase I to Phase II.

    (2)  Proof of Principle: Phase I - Winter 2010 Priority Announcement (Specific Research Areas)

In this competition, funds are available to encourage and support applications in specific areas that are aligned with CIHR's research priority areas and mandates. The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is up to $160,000 for a maximum of 1 year.  CIHR anticipates that three grants will be funded through this competition.

    CIHR Research Priority Areas:

    PREPARATION OF APPLICATIONS:

Please read carefully the Proof of Principle Grants - ResearchNet "Application" Phase Instructions when preparing the application (http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/27947.html).

Applicants will work with the Innovations and Partnerships Office (IPO) of the University to complete the applications with required signatures before submission through ResearchNet and mailing of signature pages by mail to CIHR.

University of Toronto Centre for Patient Safety:
2009-2010 Certificate in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement

    Dear Faculty,

Last year, Drs. Ed Etchells (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre), Kaveh Shojania (SHSC), Chaim Bell (St. Michael’s Hospital), Anne Matlow (Sick Kids Hospital), and Chris Hayes (St. Michael’s) ran a Certificate Course through the University of Toronto’s Centre for Faculty Development. This course filled to capacity within two weeks of the announcement. The 39 participants came from the Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Surgery, Family & Community Medicine, and Radiology and represented all of the core University of Toronto teaching hospitals. Their academic ranks included subspecialty residents and fellows (5), Clinical Associates (2), Lecturers (8), Assistant Professors (14), and Full Professors (3), including one Division Head.  These individuals predominantly came from the Faculty of Medicine, but this year’s course has been modified to increase multidisciplinary participation.

The course consists of didactic and interactive sessions roughly 2 Friday afternoons per month from October to May. Interested individuals can also use the course as an opportunity to develop projects in patient safety or quality improvement that they plan to implement in their respective institutions.

Formal and informal feedback from last year’s course has been uniformly positive, so the course is being offered again under the auspices of both the Centre for Faculty Development and the newly created University of Toronto Centre for Patient Safety. Guest lectures include prominent local and external researchers and decision makers (e.g., from the Ministry of Health), as well as the course directors.

The full course description and link to the registration form can be found at http://www.deptmedicine.utoronto.ca/Faculty/patient_safety.htm
