    Dear Faculty,

We had previously circulated a request from colleagues at McGill University for your participation in their Placebo Survey. To date there has been very little input and it is very important that our department participate. I strongly urge you to please help our colleagues by taking five minutes to complete their survey.

    Dear Colleague,

The use of placebos in clinical practice is both topical and controversial.  Please share your experience with us by kindly completing a 5-minute anonymous survey concerning your attitudes towards placebo use in medical practice.  This web-based survey has been approved for research by the Ethics Committee and is completely confidential.

    Awards and Honours

I am pleased to announce the following awards and honours achieved by members of the Department of Psychiatry recently.

Tony George and Neil Vasdev each have been awarded a prestigious Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF) from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI). These awards constitute national recognition of the quality of recipients’ academic achievements to date and a strong vote of confidence in recipients and their research programs.

Raed Hawa is co-recipient of a 2009 Helen P. Batty Award in Faculty Development for his contributions to the Teaching for Learning and Collaboration Program. The award is in the category of Innovation in Program Development and Design and will be presented during the Faculty of Medicine Educational Achievement event on May 19, 2009.

Susan Lieff has been appointed Director of Academic Leadership Development at the Centre for Faculty Development in recognition of her contributions to understanding academic leadership in the health professions. Susan also will receive the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry’s Educator of the Year Award at the AAGP Annual Meeting in Honolulu in March 2009. This award recognizes extraordinary efforts, innovations and accomplishments that have a direct impact on the quality of geriatric psychiatry education.

Paul Links has been appointed Editor in Chief of the Journal of Personality Disorders, a very significant international publication. This appointment recognizes Paul’s very prominent stature in the field of personality disorders research and his many contributions to understanding aspects of personality in relation to suicide, impulsivity and affect regulation.

Daniel Mueller has been invited to attend the 2009 International Congress on Schizophrenia Research as a Young Investigator Travel Award Recipient. His research was judged by a distinguished group of psychiatric researchers as superior.

Sagar Parikh has been selected as the 2007-2008 co-recipient of the Dave Davis Award for Excellence in Continuing Education and Professional Development. The award will be presented at the Faculty of Medicine Awards Ceremony in the spring of this year.

Bruce Pollock has been selected as the recipient of the American Psychiatric Association Jack Weinberg Memorial Award for 2009. This award was established in memory of Jack Weinberg MD, a geriatric psychiatrist and a past president of APA. It “honors a psychiatrist who has demonstrated special leadership or who has done outstanding work in clinical practice, training or research into geriatric psychiatry.” The award will be bestowed on Bruce at the APA Convocation in May 2009.

Hiroyuki Uchida, a geriatric clinical fellow, has had his research paper “Sensitivity of Older Patients to Antipsychotic Motor Side Effects: A PET Study Examining Potential Mechanisms” selected as the best original work submitted by an early career investigator by the AAGP review committee for the Barry Lebowitz Early Career Scientist Award. The award will be presented at the AAGP Annual Meeting in Honolulu on March 5, 2009.

Lesley Wiesenfeld has been selected by the American Psychiatric Association as a recipient of an Annual Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents. This award recognizes “outstanding and sustaining contributions made as a faculty member at the University of Toronto” and will be presented at the 2009 APA Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

I am sure that everyone will join me in congratulating these very talented colleagues and in thanking them for their exceptional contributions to the Department of Psychiatry!

    RISE Fellowship Description

The R.I.S.E Program (Research, Scholarship and Innovation in Education) of the Department of Psychiatry is pleased to announce the upcoming competition for the R.I.S.E Education Research Fellowship. This two-year fellowship is offered to individuals who have either completed postgraduate training in psychiatry or a related field or to graduate students who wish to specialize in health professional education. The fellowship aims to provide a solid understanding of major educational issues including curriculum, assessment and evaluation, principals and philosophies of medical education, learning theory, administration, faculty development and other aspects of health professional education. In particular the fellowship will enable the individual to develop a deep knowledge of the application of these areas to health professional education. A major focus of the fellowship is the acquisition of research expertise in health professional education. The majority of the fellow’s time will be devoted to undertaking a formal graduate program or post-doctoral work in health professional education. This will consist of an original research project in collaboration with established educational researchers at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education or the Institute of Medical Sciences or other graduate department of the University of Toronto. The fellowship is supervised by a member of Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry RISE Program and should lead to least one or two publications in a refereed journal as well as one or more presentations at international meetings. In addition to the focus on research, an emphasis is placed on the development of teaching skills and educational innovation through participation in the educational activities of the Department of Psychiatry and in the other health professional faculties at the University of Toronto.

Fellows must not undertake more than 15 hours/week of clinical or other non-fellowship related work, or more than 4-hours of teaching per week that is not connected to the primary research project. The R.I.S.E fellow will normally be provided with appropriate office space, computer equipment and support at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education at the University Health Network. (A separate application to be a Wilson Centre Fellow is required). The fellowship provides for a total of $35.000 salary support annually for a period of 2-years in addition to support for conference attendance.

    Application Deadline: March 31st 2009
