Canada is the only G8 country without a mental health strategy. The Mental Health Commission of Canada has been given the responsibility to work with Canadians to address this gap.

An important part of this process is for the Commission to hear from as many individual Canadians as possible that have been affected by or are interested in mental health issues. The Commission is also committed to engaging with organisations or groups who are active in the area of mental health, mental illness and addiction.

With this in mind, the Commission has launched an extensive online consultation process to allow you, or your group or organization, to learn about and provide input on this very important topic.

COUPE Best Paper Award for Medical Students

Dear Undergraduate Medical Students,

On behalf of Dr. Jodi Lofchy, Director Undergraduate Medical Education, I am pleased to announce that the COUPE Best Paper Award for Medical Students is now open for 2009 submissions.

This award is designed to recognize a student in undergraduate medical education who demonstrates an enhanced level of understanding and interest in mental health. Since its inception, this prestigious prize has been awarded to a U of T student. Let’s keep this trend going, please review the following attachment outlining all eligibility and requirements.

The author of the winning submission will be notified by e-mail and acknowledged in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry. As well, an announcement will be made at the CPA annual meeting in the fall. The winner will receive $ 250.00, travel expenses paid to attend the fall CPA meeting, (up to a value of $750.00) as well as an engraved plaque from COUPE.

Submissions are accepted by e-mail only. Please send your paper to Ms. Jennifer Holland at jenniferm.holland@utoronto.ca in the Undergraduate Medical Education Office. The deadline is midnight on March 15, 2009.

TAPSCOTT CHAIR IN SCHIZOPHRENIA STUDIES
AND HEAD, SCHIZOPHRENIA PROGRAM

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto is conducting a search for the joint position of Tapscott Chair in Schizophrenia Studies and Head of the Schizophrenia Program. The position is situated at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto has one of the largest concentrations of faculty and students in the mental health field in the world. Academic activities are organized into 14 priority programs including schizophrenia (http://www.utpsychiatry.ca). The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is Canada's leading addictions and mental health facility, fully affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry and designated as a centre of excellence by the World Health Organization (http://www.camh.net). It enjoys a high profile international reputation and plays a key role in influencing health policy at all levels of government.

The successful candidate will be a productive clinician-scientist. He/she will be responsible for developing a strong interdisciplinary university program in schizophrenia research (basic, clinical and population) and education with a centre of excellence at CAMH. Overall success will be measured by the evolution of a stimulating academic program, characterized by recruitment and retention of productive faculty members, external funding and peer-reviewed publications and the active participation of students and fellows. The successful candidate will be a senior clinician-scientist with a strong record of independent scholarship in the schizophrenia field and with evidence of success in providing leadership and educating and mentoring students and junior faculty members. He/she will be eligible for an academic appointment at the Professor or Associate Professor level.

RISE Fellowship Description

The R.I.S.E Program (Research, Scholarship and Innovation in Education) of the Department of Psychiatry is pleased to announce the upcoming competition for the R.I.S.E Education Research Fellowship. This two-year fellowship is offered to individuals who have either completed postgraduate training in psychiatry or a related field or to graduate students who wish to specialize in health professional education. The fellowship aims to provide a solid understanding of major educational issues including curriculum, assessment and evaluation, principals and philosophies of medical education, learning theory, administration, faculty development and other aspects of health professional education. In particular the fellowship will enable the individual to develop a deep knowledge of the application of these areas to health professional education. A major focus of the fellowship is the acquisition of research expertise in health professional education. The majority of the fellow’s time will be devoted to undertaking a formal graduate program or post-doctoral work in health professional education. This will consist of an original research project in collaboration with established educational researchers at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education or the Institute of Medical Sciences or other graduate department of the University of Toronto. The fellowship is supervised by a member of Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry RISE Program and should lead to least one or two publications in a refereed journal as well as one or more presentations at international meetings. In addition to the focus on research, an emphasis is placed on the development of teaching skills and educational innovation through participation in the educational activities of the Department of Psychiatry and in the other health professional faculties at the University of Toronto.

Fellows must not undertake more than 15 hours/week of clinical or other non-fellowship related work, or more than 4-hours of teaching per week that is not connected to the primary research project. The R.I.S.E fellow will normally be provided with appropriate office space, computer equipment and support at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education at the University Health Network. (A separate application to be a Wilson Centre Fellow is required). The fellowship provides for a total of $35.000 salary support annually for a period of 2-years in addition to support for conference attendance.
