    Dear Colleague,

The PGY-5 STACER Oral Examination dates have been set for May 26th and 27th, 2009.

The centralized examination at CAMH is a critical component in the process leading up to the Royal College certification final examination and it is an important responsibility of our Department to fulfill this obligation to our PGY-4 residents so that they will be permitted to take their final certifying examinations in the spring of 2009.  Please mark these dates in your calendar!!! Note that Monday, May 25th will be orientation for all interviewers with dinner and on each day of the STACER’s you will be required to return back to CAMH at 5:00 pm in order to review your grading of the resident with the other examiners.

Thank you in advance for your help and cooperation in fulfilling this very important duty for all of our PGY5 residents.

    Sincerely,

    Ari Zaretsky, MD, FRCP(C)
    Director, Postgraduate Medical Education,
    Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry,

    Re:

Standards of Professional Behaviour for Medical Clinical Faculty

Attached is a copy of the current draft version (F1) of a new document, Standards of Professional Behaviour for Medical Clinical Faculty.

This is a new document meant to set down the standards of professionalism expected of our clinical faculty. Because of its relationships to the Policy for Clinical Faculty, the CMA Code of Ethics, and CPSO documents, the current policy applies only to physicians. It parallels the existing Standards already in force for medical students and residents. In the future, we expect to extend professional standards to all who teach and supervise in our programs.

The document is being circulated widely for comment. We ask Clinical Chairs to circulate it widely in each department. In particular, I would appreciate comment on the provisions for reporting and management of breaches of the standards and on how dealing with potential problems is shared between the university and the hospitals.

Comment can be returned to me (d.mcknight@utoronto.ca) with a copy to Joanna Marshall. (joanna.marshall@utoronto.ca). It would be very helpful if comments were received by the end of March.

What's New in Research Funding! Week of Februay 9, 2009

    • International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP): Collaborative Research Grants. The purpose of these grants is to encourage and support collaborative research between two or more research groups located in different countries. Deadline for Applications: March 15, 2009.
    • National Parkinson Foundation: Investigator-Initiated Research Grants Program. High-risk, high-yield projects are encouraged, provided that they are thoughtfully composed and reasonably likely to advance the state of the knowledge about Parkinson's disease. Both basic-research and clinical-research proposals are eligible for support. Preference will be given to scientists who are at an early stage of their professional careers. Deadline for Applications: March 15, 2009.
    • Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) Organization: Interdisciplinary Research Grants - Young Investigators' Grants and Program Grants. The HFSP supports international, preferably intercontinental, collaborations in basic life science research with emphasis placed on novel, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to fundamental investigations. Applications are invited for grants to support new approaches to understanding complex mechanisms of living organisms. Preliminary results are not required. Deadline for compulsary pre-registration: March 20, 2009. LOI deadline: March 31, 2009
    • Canadian Liver Foundation: Special Project. The CLF will be able to fund a research project in the area of Acute Fatty Liver Disease of Pregnancy and HELLP Syndrome. • Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada: Pilot Grant Program. The mandate of the Foundation is to support new research initiatives into the causes, cure, and prevention of prostate cancer, which have scientific merit. The Foundation is particularly supportive of innovative ideas and young investigators. Interdisciplinary collaboration is encouraged. Categories of research that will be considered include basic, clinical and translational research. Grants will be awarded to Canadian-based research at a maximum value of $60,000 per year. Deadline for applications: April 1, 2009.
    • Roche Organ Transplantation Research Foundation (ROTRF): Clinical Research Grants. The ROTRF offers grants for clinical research projects (e.g., projects proposing work with human clinical material, organ transplant patients, human organ preservation, human transplant pathology, and other human transplant problems) with a realistic potential for near-term clinical application. Deadline for submissions: April 1, 2009. The ROTRF has been informed by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) that the JDRF will no longer be participating in the ROTRF/JDRF Initiative.
    • Association for International Cancer Research (AICR): Research Grants. AICR policy is to support research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. AICR does not give any particular area of research greater priority, but awards its funds on the basis of the scientific quality of the applications received. All other factors being equal, preference is shown towards applications from younger researchers who are establishing themselves as principle investigators; and innovative research. Deadline for applications: April 24, 2009.
    • American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP): Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). Funds are available to support research that furthers knowledge in the area of neonatal resuscitation. RISE Fellowship Description

The R.I.S.E Program (Research, Scholarship and Innovation in Education) of the Department of Psychiatry is pleased to announce the upcoming competition for the R.I.S.E Education Research Fellowship. This two-year fellowship is offered to individuals who have either completed postgraduate training in psychiatry or a related field or to graduate students who wish to specialize in health professional education. The fellowship aims to provide a solid understanding of major educational issues including curriculum, assessment and evaluation, principals and philosophies of medical education, learning theory, administration, faculty development and other aspects of health professional education. In particular the fellowship will enable the individual to develop a deep knowledge of the application of these areas to health professional education. A major focus of the fellowship is the acquisition of research expertise in health professional education. The majority of the fellow’s time will be devoted to undertaking a formal graduate program or post-doctoral work in health professional education. This will consist of an original research project in collaboration with established educational researchers at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education or the Institute of Medical Sciences or other graduate department of the University of Toronto. The fellowship is supervised by a member of Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry RISE Program and should lead to least one or two publications in a refereed journal as well as one or more presentations at international meetings. In addition to the focus on research, an emphasis is placed on the development of teaching skills and educational innovation through participation in the educational activities of the Department of Psychiatry and in the other health professional faculties at the University of Toronto.

Fellows must not undertake more than 15 hours/week of clinical or other non-fellowship related work, or more than 4-hours of teaching per week that is not connected to the primary research project. The R.I.S.E fellow will normally be provided with appropriate office space, computer equipment and support at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education at the University Health Network. (A separate application to be a Wilson Centre Fellow is required). The fellowship provides for a total of $35.000 salary support annually for a period of 2-years in addition to support for conference attendance.
