MAJOR RESOURCES SUPPORT (MRS) PROGRAM: LETTER OF INTENT

The Major Resources Support (MRS) program aims to facilitate the effective access of Canadian researchers to major regional, national, or international (based in Canada) experimental or thematic research resources by financially assisting these resources to remain in a state of readiness for researchers to use. It also seeks to facilitate access by Canadian researchers to major international resources located outside Canada, excluding any direct financial support towards the operating and maintenance costs of such resources. Starting from fiscal year 2009-2010, the Major Resources Support program will only provide support to unique national or international (located in Canada) research resources. Ongoing grants to any type of resource will not be affected by the program’s new focus. At the time of renewal the resources will need to demonstrate that they fully satisfy the revised program’s objective and selection criteria. Submission of full applications is by invitation only.

NSERC LOI (FORM 181) DEADLINES:  May 1, 2009 (Friday); August 1, 2009 (deadline for Subatomic Physics Resources LOIs ONLY)

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH AND TRAINING EXPERIENCE (CREATE) PROGRAM: LETTER OF INTENT

The CREATE Program supports the training of teams of outstanding students and postdoctoral fellows from Canada and abroad through the development of innovative training programs that encourage collaborative and integrative approaches, and address significant scientific challenges associated to Canada's research priorities, and facilitate the transition of new researchers from trainees to productive employees in the Canadian workforce.

NSERC LOI (FORM 187) DEADLINE:  May 15, 2009 (Friday)
INTERNAL DEADLINE:  May 1, 2009 (Friday)
    UOFT LOI QUOTA: Six (6)

NEW THIS YEAR – PROGRAM CHANGES & SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:

    1. Program Changes
    2. There will now be a Letter of Intent (LOI) stage and selection process instead of the Notification of Intent to Apply which was only used for planning purposes.
    3. Instead of a quota of four applications maximum from each eligible Canadian university, as was allowed in the 2009 competition, there will be a distinction based on the size of the university. This is in response to concerns from the university community. Large universities will have a quota of six LOIs. Mid-size universities will continue to have a quota of four LOIs. Smaller universities will have a quota of two LOIs.
    4. External peer review will be conducted by NSERC at the LOI stage.
    5. Only one (1) institutional letter of support from the applicant’s University Vice President, Research, is required by NSERC.
    6. Internal Application/Selection Procedures:
    7. The internal selection process of the 6 LOIs from the University is being reviewed and will be confirmed shortly. It is expected that selection will be completed by May 8th.
    8. To be considered, applicants should forward their Form 187 (LOI), including the principal applicant’s Form 100, to Research Services by Friday, May 1st.
    9. The completed LOI (which consists of Form 187, Form 100 of the principal applicant and institutional letter of support) can be submitted electronically through the NSERC Online System or by paper. If by paper, the complete package must be mailed to:

    University of Toronto
    Department of Psychiatry
    35TH ANNUAL HARVEY STANCER
    RESEARCH DAY
    Thursday June 25th, 2009

The Department of Psychiatry's 35th Annual Harvey Stancer Research Day will be held on Thursday June 25th, 2009.

Research Day is a major function of the Department of Psychiatry. It allows researchers to present a synopsis of their current research to one another, to the Toronto Psychiatric community, and to the public. In particular, it provides the opportunity for junior members in our Department, including residents, fellows and students, to prepare and deliver an academic presentation. Research submissions, including studies using quantitative, qualitative, and case study designs and methodologies are welcome.

This year's Harvey Stancer Research Day will be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Poster presenters are expected to display their poster prior to the keynote session and are expected to attend the keynote session and be available during the poster session to answer questions from attendees. Speakers are expected to attend the keynote session and sessions when they are not presenting.

Attendees not presenting are required to register starting from March 9,
2009 and closing on April 17, 2009 no later than 5 p.m. EST. on line at:
    http://www.ohtnweb.ca/UofTResearchDay/frmLogin.aspx

Attendees submitting an abstract for either a poster presentation or an oral presentation are required to register starting from March 9, 2009 and closing on April 17, 2009 no later than 5 p.m. EST on line at:
    http://www.ohtnweb.ca/UofTResearchDay/frmLogin.aspx

    AWARDS

Awards will be given out for the Best Abstract Submission and Oral Presentation by a Resident, a Graduate Student, a Fellow, and a New Investigator, and a separate award for the Best Poster.

To compete for the Resident, Graduate Student, Fellow and New Investigator awards, a 1-2 page written summary of the research study must be submitted along with the abstract submission by April 17, 2009. Adjudication for these awards will be based on both the written submission (abstract and summary) and the oral presentation at Research Day. Adjudication for the Best Poster award is completed at Research Day and is based solely on the poster itself, no written summaries are required.

If you have any queries regarding online submissions, please direct these to Mary Macri in the Department of Psychiatry at (416) 535-8501 ext. 4897 or by email at mary.macri@utoronto.ca.

Council of Education Deans and the Education and Teaching Awards Committee
    Nominations for External Awards

    Dear Deans, Chairs and Directors,

I am contacting you once again on behalf of the Council of Education Deans and the Education and Teaching Awards Committee to inform you that the internal deadline for nominations for external awards has been set for May 26, 2009.  I will be sending notices out twice annually, in the spring and again in the fall to ask for nominations for external teaching awards.  Hopefully this revised system of requesting nominations will give you more time to consider nominees from your departments and to prepare their information for submission to the Education and Teaching Awards Committee.

You are invited to provide nominations for the awards listed below.  Please look at the Faculty of Medicine website regularly for more award information http://www.facmed.utoronto.ca/programs/teach/external.htm

We are asking you to submit the following information no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday May 26th so that we can review all nominations at our June committee meeting.  Once the Education and Teaching Awards Committee has confirmed a Faculty nomination, if requested, I will be working with the departments and the nominee to put together the nomination packages.  We request that the following documents be submitted with the nomination:

    • A summary paragraph (explaining why the nominee is suitable for this award)
    • Teaching dossier
    • Current CV

If this email should be redirected to someone else in your department who deals more specifically with matters related to education awards I would ask that you please forward the email to them.  If you have any questions or require assistance please contact me at m.lynch@utoronto.ca or phone (416) 946-3921.

THE PSYCHOTHERAPY AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

As we come to the end of the academic year, it is once again time to pause and reflect on our work in considering nominating one of our colleagues for the Psychotherapy Award for Academic Excellence. This award, established in 2001, is intended to recognize outstanding contribution by an individual to the Psychotherapy Program.  The scope of this contribution can be reflected in any of the activities of the Psychotherapy Program, including teaching and education, psychotherapy research, program development, clinical scholarship or creative professional development.  Recognition should be provided to individuals across the entire collective of our work, and not be limited to contributions that represent a “lifetime achievement”. In this way, excellence, passion and commitment, in whatever guises, to the academic endeavour of psychotherapy will be more apparent.

Please see the attached notice for the guidelines around the process of nomination. Thank you for your attention to this.
