After over two decades as Postgraduate Coordinator, Marie Mara will be moving from Postgraduate Education to a new role as Departmental Assistant. Brenda Cerilli will be the Acting Postgraduate & Fellowship Coordinator effective immediately. Brenda can be reached at brenda.cerilli@utoronto.ca, 416-979-6911, Room 828.

Irene Ly will also be moving from Postgraduate Education to a new role as Departmental Finance Officer. Sue Eccles will be our new Education Assistant effective immediately. Sue's contact information is sue.eccles@utoronto.ca, 416-979-4275, Room 833. Irene will continue to train and assist Sue through this transition.

In addition, a new administrative position of Education Coordinator will be filled by Terrie Oliveira effective Monday, September 15. Terrie can be reached at theresa.oliveira@utoronto.ca, 416-979-4985, Room 829.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the exemplary and unique contribution made by both Marie and Irene to Postgraduate Education in our Department of Psychiatry. These two modest but highly talented individuals have been loved and admired by countless residents and faculty alike. We are deeply indebted to both of them for their loyalty, hard work and patience as they provided oversight to one of the largest and most complex residency training programs in the Faculty of Medicine. Marie and Irene will be dearly missed in Postgraduate Education, however, their departmental knowledge and superb organizational skills will be fully utilized in their new roles in our Department of Psychiatry.

    Re:

    Psychiatry Education Office

    Dear Faculty,

The Department of Psychiatry Education Office has a small number of staff who are devoted to overseeing many complex administrative responsibilities. Therefore, for all regular resident teaching, it is the primary responsibility of the faculty who is involved in teaching to produce their own handouts in advance of their specific lecture or seminar. This preparation of handouts should be done at the faculty member's own local hospital site with support from the local education coordinator or administrative staff. The Department of Psychiatry Postgraduate Education Office, with direction from the faculty member teacher, will continue to take responsibility to ensure that electronic copies of the learning material are disseminated to all resident learners.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    Ari E. Zaretsky, MD, FRCPC
    Director, Postgraduate Education
    Associate Professor of Psychiatry

    Business Manager

    INVITATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

I am writing to invite you to consider joining the Continuing Mental Health Education (CMHE) committee of our U of T Department of Psychiatry. We are the most fun, most stimulated, and best fed committee in the department! Our group meets to foster the development of CE; we do this by meeting 6-8 times per year, sharing ideas for planning new education events, identifying ways to improve health care by disseminating education, and learning about the latest in CE innovation and research.

We have openings for two members-at-large. Newer faculty are encouraged to join. We promise to show you the best ways to get your ideas and passions for education transformed into projects, and to ensure that your activities get proper academic and career recognition.

    Questions? Email me.

    thanks

    Sagar

The Department of Psychiatry at Women’s College Hospital is offering a one year funded fellowship to MD or PhD candidates seeking advanced training in HIV and women’s mental health.

Applicants must have successfully completed their RCPSC psychiatry specialty examinations and be a member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario by the date of commencement of the fellowship.  PhD candidates must have completed the requirements of their PhD program prior to starting the fellowship.

The fellowship will include a mix of clinical and academic activities. The specific time allocation is negotiable, but ordinarily, fellows spend at least 75% of their time in scholarly pursuits.  Clinical work will focus on women’s mental health and may be spent with any one of the four existing programs in the Department of Psychiatry: General Psychiatry, Mental Health in Medicine, Reproductive Life Stages, or Trauma Therapy.  Alternatively, the successful applicant may wish to work jointly between two programs.  The academic component of the fellowship will include the design and completion of a research or other scholarly project suitable for publication.  Topics for this project should be directly related to the aforementioned clinical themes of the department.  Suitable research areas may include: fertility and family planning in persons infected with HIV, HIV and trauma in women, or pregnant women with HIV and mood or anxiety symptoms. Other potential topics can be considered and should be negotiated directly with the supervisor.

Interested candidates may apply for one year of funding beginning July 1, 2009 or another mutually agreed upon date. Internal funding will be subject to the rules of the University of Toronto Department of Psychiatry fellowship program.
