Re: History of Psychiatry Seminars

On May 14, we enjoyed the last of the six seminars on the past, present, and future of a number of areas of Psychiatry. The series was originally conceived by Don Wasylenki as part of the centenary celebrations of our Department. He asked us to organize and facilitate the seminars and we accepted with a brave smile, though inwardly trembling at the possibility that these sessions would be boring and a burden to an already overworked staff. As we now know, our fears were groundless. The seminars were very well attended and appreciated for their content, the excellence of the presentations, and the pleasant venue - not to mention the delicious refreshments.

A number of people contributed to the success of the enterprise:

The seminar leaders: Paula Goering, Vivian Rakoff, Ken Shulman, James Kennedy, Chris Webster, and David Goldbloom as well as the superb presenters whom they dragooned.

The Planning Committee: Susan Bradley, John Court, David Goldbloom, Vivian Rakoff, Mary Seeman, Ken Shulman, Don Wasylenki and Chris Webster.

The support staff: Eva Wong who organized the initial meetings and after Eva left, Joanne Bedasie and Diane Granato; Kathy Ostaff who quietly facilitated everything; Alicia Barker and Kelly Killip (who have both since left the Department); Howard Chow whose technical wizardry added so much; and very special thanks to Alison Lind who took over the whole project from organization to publicity when Eva left for her new job. Because of Alison’s superlative work, Frank and Stan had absolutely nothing to do but enjoy the seminars, for the past several months

Finally, one must mention John Court’s scholarly and unstinting contributions to the seminars and to the publicity flyers. He tells us that sound recordings have been made of all the presentations and that Howard Chow is working on making these available on the internet in the near future.

Opportunities

The Department of Psychiatry at Women’s College Hospital is offering a one year funded fellowship to MD or PhD candidates seeking advanced training in HIV and women’s mental health.

Applicants must have successfully completed their RCPSC psychiatry specialty examinations and be a member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario by the date of commencement of the fellowship. PhD candidates must have completed the requirements of their PhD program prior to starting the fellowship.

The fellowship will include a mix of clinical and academic activities. The specific time allocation is negotiable, but ordinarily, fellows spend at least 75% of their time in scholarly pursuits. Clinical work will focus on women’s mental health and may be spent with any one of the four existing programs in the Department of Psychiatry: General Psychiatry, Mental Health in Medicine, Reproductive Life Stages, or Trauma Therapy. Alternatively, the successful applicant may wish to work jointly between two programs. The academic component of the fellowship will include the design and completion of a research or other scholarly project suitable for publication. Topics for this project should be directly related to the aforementioned clinical themes of the department. Suitable research areas may include: fertility and family planning in persons infected with HIV, HIV and trauma in women, or pregnant women with HIV and mood or anxiety symptoms. Other potential topics can be considered and should be negotiated directly with the supervisor.

Interested candidates may apply for one year of funding beginning July 1, 2009 or another mutually agreed upon date. Internal funding will be subject to the rules of the University of Toronto Department of Psychiatry fellowship program. “Let’s Talk About It”

A community forum on mental illness is taking place in Toronto and I wanted to extend an invitation to you, your colleagues, and your students.

The forum is part of “Let’s Talk About It” – a provincial campaign designed to motivate Ontarians to engage in a dialogue about mental illness and take action to improve access to new drug therapies that effectively treat the symptoms of schizophrenia. The free event is being held on Tuesday, June 10th from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) – Training Room A&B, Queen W. location. It is open to community members, stakeholders, government, and key opinion leaders. Media will also be notified and encouraged to attend.

Mount Sinai Psychotherapy Institute (MSPI):

Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP)

The Mount Sinai Psychotherapy Institute (MSPI) is pleased to announce an upcoming workshop on Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) which will be taught by Drs. Sian Rawkins and Molyn Leszcz. CBASP (McCullough) is the only psychotherapeutic model developed specifically for the treatment of chronic depression. It is a time-limited manualized approach whose effectiveness has been validated through large scale research trials (NEJM 2000). Its aims are to help the chronically depressed adult to break through the self-perpetuating cycle of disconnection from the environment, so that their behavioral consequences can better inform their interpersonal behavior. Through active use of the therapeutic relationship, goals include helping the patient generate empathic behavior and heal interpersonal trauma.

Enrolment will be limited to 30 participants and the format will include interactive teaching and demonstration of techniques with standardized patients held over two weekends in April and June of 2008 (April 25 and 26, June 20 and 21). This will be enhanced with two months of case based learning and group consultation through our electronic list-serve. This workshop can be taken on its own or, by application, as part of the advanced training of the MSPI Psychotherapy Certificate Programme .

Annual meeting of the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology

Deadline for early registration for the Annual meeting of the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology has been extended to April 15, 2008.

The meeting will be held in Toronto June 6-9th, 2008 at the Hilton Hotel.

This conference brings together Canadian and International leaders in Neuroscience, Neurospsychopharmacology and Psychiatry to present innovative symposia with a strong emphasis on translational research. Trainees and graduate students are encouraged to apply for travel awards and to compete for a spot in "CCNP: The Next Generation" symposium. The annual meeting is geared toward all basic scientists and clinical practitioners working in psychiatry focused domains. The President's theme for 2008 is "Neurodevelopment and Behaviour".

The 2008 Annual Thelma Cardwell Research Day

This year, as part of the annual Thelma Cardwell Research Day we have the pleasure of bringing you a world-renowned speaker in the field of mental health. Having garnered the attention of the world during her own struggle with mental illness, our speaker Margaret (Trudeau) Kemper now works to erase the stigma that prevents people from seeking treatment and creates barriers in the workplace.
Currently 1 in 5 Canadians will be affected by mental illness at some point in their lives, and at any given time, 300,000 Canadians struggle with serious and persistent mental illness. This is an issue of great relevance to rehabilitation professionals. Many individuals facing physical disability find their recovery impacted by the onset of mental illness.
At the University of Toronto, our research in this area is focused on removing stigma as we identify ways to return these individuals to meaningful lives and employment. We hope you will join with us for this lecture and celebrate the success of our students who will carry on this very important work.
The Thelma Cardwell Research Day is one of the highlights of the University of Toronto Occupational Therapy program and is highly anticipated in the OT community. We will also be featuring many important research projects conducted by our graduating students. These innovative projects move forward the study of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and include research that explores models of occupational therapy to very applied projects that look at the development of new technologies for people with disabilities.
