Please see Dr. Kapur’s memo below.

Sent on Behalf of Shitij Kapur

    Dear Colleagues:

I write to you to share with you further information about ceremonies to mark Hubert's tragic passing. As you may have seen in yesterday's Globe and Mail, below is Hubert's obituary. I have spoken with Hubert's wife, Monica, and she very much appreciates all the support coming from Hubert's friends and colleagues at CAMH. Hubert's family has indicated that they would like to keep his funeral service small and oriented towards close friends. If others would like to show support to Hubert's family during this difficult time, there are a number of organizations listed in his obituary that you can support.

Also, as per the wishes of his family, we will be holding a memorial service for Hubert at CAMH later this summer. This will be an opportunity to commemorate his life and celebrate his many professional achievements. We will send you further details on the memorial service as soon as they are finalized with the family.

If you have any questions, or require any assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me, Darryl, or Jim. We are here to help during this difficult time.

    Globe & Mail, April 26, 2006

VAN TOL, Hubert, PhD. At age 46, Huub was killed when a truck hit his bicycle on his way to work on April 20, 2006. Born on September 20, 1959 in Maastricht, The Netherlands. He leaves behind his loving wife Monica Seger-van Tol, and his beloved children Helena, Luke, and Nicholas, his parents Anneke and Hubert van Tol and his brother Rob. He will be sadly missed by his mother-in- law Marianne Seger. He will be fondly remembered by all his Seger and Rhamey in-laws, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at Loretto Abbey, 101 Mason Blvd at 1:30 pm on Thursday, April 27th. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the HHM van Tol Fund for research at Neuroscience Canada, or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (the Frank Seger Memorial Fund) or to Feed the Children.

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY

To:             All Members, Residents, Fellows and Students
                      in the Department of Psychiatry

    From:         Dr. Sean B. Rourke
                     Chair, Harvey Stancer Research Day

    Date:         March 27, 2006

Re:            32nd ANNUAL HARVEY STANCER RESEARCH DAY,
                           THURSDAY, JUNE 15TH, 2006

    Dear Colleagues,

We are very pleased to announce that the theme for the 32nd Annual Harvey Stancer Research Day is Neuroscience with a Keynote Address by:

Dr. Donald Stuss, PhD., O. Ont., FRSC, FCAHS
University Professor, Departments of Medicine and Psychology
Director of Research, Rotman Research Institute

“Neuropsychiatry and Neuroscience: Personal and University Contexts”

Research Day is a major function of the Department of Psychiatry. It allows researchers to present a synopsis of their current research to one another, to the Toronto Psychiatric community, and to the public. In particular, it provides the opportunity for junior members of the Department, including residents, fellows and students to prepare and deliver an academic presentation. Research submissions, including studies using quantitative, qualitative, and case study designs and methodologies are welcome.

The Harvey Stancer Research day will be held at the Munk Centre for International Studies located at 1 Devonshire Place (corner of Hoskin Avenue and Devonshire Place).

In order to be eligible to present at Research Day, you must complete the information sheet and submit your abstract online (maximum 250 words) at the following website http://idrp.ohtn.on.ca/UofTResearchday/UofTWelcome.html.

The Research Day Adjudication Committee reviews all abstracts submitted for poster and oral presentations. Junior staff, fellows, residents and students from all disciplines are especially encouraged to submit oral presentations. Sessions will be organized thematically and will reflect the scope of the programs and divisions existing in the Department of Psychiatry. In addition, special emphasis is placed this year on Neuroscience.

There will be awards given out for the Best Abstract submission and Oral Presentation by a Resident, a Graduate Student, a Fellow and a New Investigator, and a separate award for the Best Poster. Each of the awards carries with them a substantial cash contribution.

To compete for Resident, Graduate Student, Fellow and New Investigator awards, a 1-2 page written summary of the research study must be submitted along with the abstract submission by May 5, 2006. Adjudication for these awards will be based on both the written submission (abstract and summary) and oral presentation on Research Day. Adjudication for the Best Poster award is completed on Research Day and is based solely on the poster itself (i.e. no written summaries are required).

Note: If you are not planning to compete in one of the award competitions, you are not required to submit a written summary - you need only to submit an abstract. You may submit up to a maximum of three abstracts but no more than one abstract for oral presentation.

    Submission requirements:

Please submit all information online at http://idrp.ohtn.on.ca/UofTResearchday/UofTWelcome.html by Friday May 5th 2006 no later than 5:00 pm. Please note that we will not accept late submissions.

Oral presentations will be limited to 15 minutes, followed by a 5-minute question period. Please note that media representatives may attend the presentations and will have access to the abstracts.

If you have any queries regarding online submissions, please direct these to Ms. Joanne Bedasie in the Research Office at the Department of Psychiatry at (416) 979-4276 or by e-mail at joanne.bedasie@utoronto.ca.

I look forward to your attendance and participation in this year’s exciting and stimulating event.

  • "Psyche in the Lab: Celebrating Brain Science in Canada"

A new book by Mary V. Seeman and Neil Seeman
    Foreword by Senator Roméo Dallaire

Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation, this volume celebrates the creativity and dedication of Canadian scientists who have helped unravel some of the mysteries of the mind over recent years. The authors used criterion-based techniques to select 16 leading scientists for semi-structured interviews, as well as well-known philanthropists, policy-makers, and psychiatric “survivors.” The fascinating interviews and reports not only show what motivates such outstanding individuals, but also describe what Canada and other countries can do to encourage more and better neuroscience. Of interest to clinicians, researchers and students of psychiatry, as well as interested lay persons.

Re:        APA Golf Tournament - Monday, May 22nd, 2006

I am writing to let you know that as part of the Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Toronto next May, there will be a golf tournament. This is an annual event sponsored by GAPA (Golfers of the American Psychiatric Association) and is always lots of fun. All handicaps are accommodated! The tournament will be held on the North Course at Angus Glen, site of both past and upcoming Canadian Opens. The date is Monday, May 22nd with a shotgun start at 7:30 and a lunch with prizes to follow. Stan Jennings, who organizes these tournaments, is hoping to have a good Canada vs USA competition with perhaps an added contingent from Ireland! I hope that many of our Summerfest participants and all other golfers in the Department will come out. Please contact Stan Jennings at <wsjennings@tuckerpsychiatric.com> to sign up!
