My father was a professional welder who has spent his entire career life working in the petroleum industry. He has had the opportunity of working with multinational companies in various destinations across the globe. My Grandpa used to tell me that my dad was good in arts and he never imagined pursuing any other course apart from welding.
Even after retiring, my dad still loves to keep his hands dirty by spending his free time welding garbage tracks for his friend Tom. My older brother followed in his steps and pursued a course in welding when he completed his high school studies.
He graduated with good grades from college and did his internship with a shipping company. Due to his exemplary performance during his internship, he was offered an employment opportunity with the shipping company. That is where he has been working for the last eight years.
My grandpa on the other hand was a blacksmith. He managed to raise five sons in a three bedroomed house while working at his blacksmith shop. Three of my uncles took over the blacksmithing business from my grandfather who was already aging. They have managed to expand the family business to other towns.
Our family has a background full of men who love arts. Men who love to put their creativity and imaginations into forms that other people can see and appreciate. Sometimes I wonder how I ended up in a white lab coat in a pharmacy school a few years back!
My journey to becoming a pharmacist began when I was twelve. The desire to commit my time to public service was bigger than that of spending my time playing with other kids. I engaged in various community activities such as planting trees, cleaning our neighborhood and several others. I had a strong desire of changing peoples’ lives.
While at school, I concentrated all my focus to my studies. I worked hard to attain good grades in all subjects. Among all the subjects, chemistry and mathematics were my favorite. I have lost count of the number of times I received presents for exemplary performance in these subjects.
When I graduated from high school, I began volunteering at a chemist in our town. The owner of the chemist was friends with my father. Kenny, as he was popularly known among the locals was happy that I was interested to volunteer in his medical store.
I was tasked with the responsibility of taking stocks, cleaning the premises and shelving. I still had not decided what course I would pursue in the university. I however had begun to gain some interest in pharmacy.
While working at the chemist, I received a phone call from a friend who had seen a scholarship post on the internet. He informed me about the opportunity and I realized that it would be a great opportunity to study pharmacy in one of the biggest universities.
I was happy that I was among the few candidates who won the scholarship. I was able to save my father the distress of providing for tuition and upkeep fees up to masters level.
Pharmacy is a great course that gives individuals the opportunity to work in different areas such as chemists, hospitals or even as a tutor. It is one of the well-paying careers but it calls for focused individuals who have a passion in this field.
